The first stage of AIGO (the corner-station, end-stations and facilities housing an 80m interferometer) was opened by the Premier of Western Australia, the Hon. R. Court, on 10 March 2000. The opening was held in conjunction with lectures by visiting distinguished physicists, Professor B. Barish (Director of LIGO, USA), Professor A. Giazotto (Director, VIRGO, Italian/French collaboration) and Professor R. Ruffini (President, International Center for Relativistic Astrophysics - part of UNESCO, University of Rome) under the auspices of the Institute of Advanced Studies of The University of Western Australia.
With Professor.G. Stewart, Executive Dean, Faculty of Science, UWA, as Master of Ceremonies, the following speakers were included in the program:
Unfortunately, Dr. M. Washer, MP and Professor J. Munch, University of Adelaide, were unavailable to speak.
At the completion of speeches the plaque commemorating the opening was 'revealed' by the Premier who cut a ribbon to release a pendulum which, on the second swing, knocked over a weight. The falling weight set off an explosion of streamers and, at the same time, a copy of the black hole art work sprung up to reveal the plaque.
The event has also been commemorated by an original piece of art work by Torres Strait Islander artist, Julie Weekes, which has also been used in the production of colourful t-shirts. T-shirts can be ordered from Debbie Greenwood, debbie@physics.uwa.edu.au, at a cost of $25 plus postage.
The speeches and revealing of the plaque was followed by a tour of the laboratory, its equipment, facilities and displays.

Use of the Facility: researchers in other disciplines as well as physics are welcome to use the facility. AIGO has accommodation units, complete kitchen facilities, meeting room and workshop. For background information a Prospectus has been prepared giving background information on gravity waves, gravitational wave observatories being constructed world wide and on AIGO in particular.

CONGRESS PLENARY SPEAKER - We can now confirm that
Prof. John Barrow (University of Cambridge)
will be the ASGRG-nominated plenary speaker to the Congress. John is well known for his research in gravitation and cosmology, and his popular books. After many years as Professor of Astronomy at the University of Sussex he has recently moved to DAMTP, University of Cambridge, where he is Director of a new Public Understanding of Science Initiative by the UK - the "Millennium Mathematics Project"

A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE CONGRESS
The Congress will commence with a Welcome Reception on Sunday 10 December and the Official Opening of the formal program will be on Monday 11 December in Bonython Hall at the University of Adelaide. Anthony Lun advises that any person who may be interested in joining the relativity group at Monash - and who fits the criteria of having two to six years of postdoctoral research experience as at 1 September 2000 - should apply for a Logan Fellowship. The fellowship pays very well for doing pure research and it can provide funding for up to six years.

Monash University has an international focus and global presence with six campuses in the state of Victoria, Australia, and alliances with other leading international institutions. The University is involved in both fundamental and applied research of international quality and relevance across a wide range of disciplines.
Monash University has established the Logan Research Fellowship scheme to attract internationally competitive researchers to undertake research of national and international significance. Applications are invited from suitably qualified women and men for five research fellowships. Monash University reserves the right to award fewer than five fellowships.
The terms of the Fellowship compare favourably with similar schemes such as the Australian Research Council's Research Fellowship scheme and the Queen Elizabeth II scheme for outstanding researchers, and the Australian National University's Fellowship scheme.
The initial salary is in the Research Fellow Level B range, A$53,844 to $57,464* per annum depending on experience, with an opportunity to advance in later years to the level C range from A$59,288* per annum. Research Support Grants for Fellowship holders range from A$5,000 to $20,000 per annum depending on the needs of the research program. Return airfares are provided for successful candidates and their dependants.
The Fellow's Faculty/Department/School is responsible for providing one-third of the salary and on-costs, as well as providing accommodation and access to facilities and services necessary for the proposed research program.
Applicants should have two to six years of postdoctoral research experience. The appointment is for three years, renewable to six years upon application.
Successful applicants are asked to commence their fellowship before 31 December, 2000.
It is intended that five prestigious Logan Research Fellowships providing first class research opportunities will be offered each year. Monash University reserves the right to offer a lesser number Fellowships.
