Module 2

Unit 3: Challenge

Load patient “17 Carpet 4, Carlos”, Case 3 from the archive by using the Select-button.

The PTV and 3 OARs are already contoured.

Try to obtain a homogeneous dose distribution of 100% (+7%, -5%) in the PTV, while the dose in the OARs should not exceed 30%!

You can use up to 5 beams but no wedges!

Add some notes and screenshots of your results for the challenge to the answer template from Unit 2.
When you are finished submit the document on Learn.

Optional challenge 1: Arc therapy
For the same patient use arc therapy to achieve the same plan objectives!

Information: Arc therapyTo use arc therapy the size of the arc and the startig gantry position have to be defined.
The size of the arc is defined in the "Arc size"-text field in the Beam panel. The default value is 0.0, specifying "no arc". To use arc therapy, an angle >0.0 has to be entered.
The arc rotation increases clockwise from the start gantry angle.
Example: A gantry angle of 300° and an arc size of 120° denotes a gantry rotation from 300° to 60° via 0°.

Optinal challenge 2: Automatic beam angle optimization

In the “Other tools”-menu you can find a button labelled “Beam angle optimization”. Pressing this button opens the . This panel offers the opportunity to do an automatic search for appropriate beam angles.

  • Try to find out about the functions of this panel and create a 4- or 5-field plan for the patient “17 Carpet 4, Carlos”, Case 3.

  • Compare the angles the program found with the ones you have chosen in the challenge.

  • Do the beam weighting and plan normalization.

  • Compare this plan to the plan you have created in the challenge.
